Oprah's Big Give

Last night I was in the mood to watch a little TV. I didn't want to invest in an entire movie -- I just wanted to watch for an hour or so. Much channel surfing ensued and I landed on an episode of a new show called "Oprah's Big Give." I believe last night's episode was the second in the series and in it the contestants were dropped in the middle of Denver, CO and given 48 hours to give away some money "in the most creative and dramatic ways." Some of the contestants sought out charitable organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and a home for children and some found random strangers in need.

Of course I am all for helping out the needy and for trumpeting the fact that there are so many people in need, but there is something about this show that bothers me. I can't put my finger on what bothers me most. Is it the fact that it is a contest? Is it the randomness of the give aways? Or is it the wealthy celebrity judges who get to decide who did the most good? The whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth and it surprised me that it did because I usually find Oprah's charitable works to be exemplary.

Am I missing something or do you agree that there something wrong with this idea?

I'm with you. There's something somewhat creepy about turning giving into a contest.

Emily -- I'm glad to hear that someone shares my view on this.

I wasn't sure how I felt - but now feel this - it's a show I can watch with my kids. the goal is to inspire others...i think we may have missed the point. who cares if it's a competition, i think it's fun. I just read on google at least 75 stories of people who are getting off the couch to do something as a result of this show. big things.. I really think, no matter, what you think of Oprah - that was the point and it's working.

Nick -- you're point is good too. If the show does get people off the couch and out there doing something, then it is a good thing. I guess I just won't watch.

BTW, I usually love Oprah (except her book club).
