Since our sunny, swimming day turned rather quickly into a rainy day we decided on an afternoon run to Barnes and Noble. Zoë wanted a particular Fancy Nancy book and I will take any excuse to go to the bookstore. We were met with Fancy Nancy success as well as some choices that will hopefully be good airplane reading (we leave for vacation in less than 2 weeks!) and we just got home a short while ago and I was thinking that I would love to sit down with my book and read for awhile. When we walked in the door I asked Zoë, "What are you going to do now?"
"I'm going up to my room and read," she said for the first time, ever.
Cue choir of angels singing "Hallelujah!"
I smiled broadly and said, "That's a great idea, have fun!" And off she went upstairs to her room to read!

Oh my goodness me- can we clone her? How I long to hear such things... Congrats Mertz- this is just another sign that you are doing this mom thing right!
Oh wow! What a wonderful, wonderful moment! Almost enough to make me want to have a child to experience such a moment, except I just know my child would have answered, "I want to see what happens if I take this book you just bought me, light a match to it, and toss it out the window. You know, the sort of thing I'll be doing for the next 18 years or so to make sure you never, ever get the chance to read even one page of a book yourself." I hope you and Zoe enjoy many years of reading (and eventually exchanging books with each other) together.

Emily -- You really do make me laugh. There is part of me that can see Zoe lighting books on fire and devising ways to keep me from reading -- rubbing her hands together and shouting "Mwah, mwah, mwah!" This one was a wonderful moment though.

As a teacher, I can totally understand the joy! I'm hoping Samantha will do that soon. Funny, we bought a Fancy Nancy book right around the same time! That happens all too often with us; I know we're secretly related!!!!
